There are several ways for a person to get the reaction he or she wants when interacting with another. And the thing is that these methods do not even involve that much effort on your part or need you to talk that much. Some of these body language involves:
Eye Contact
Knowing when to make eye contact and how long to keep the eye contact is important when it comes to influencing people. Making eye contact shows confidence in oneself and it gets people’s attention. However, too much eye contact may give an impression that you are desperate or intimidate the other person. At the same time, averting your eyes may give the impression of lack of confidence or hesitation. With practice, you will know how to properly make eye contact without overdoing it.
Gesticulation
One of the most effective ways to get the attention of someone is by interacting with them in an animated manner. Simply talking and making eye contact is not enough if you are looking for a positive reaction from a particular subject. Gesturing with your hands and body increases the chances of your audience or specific subject to react positively towards your approach. Illustrating your points through hand gestures, and other body movement can make a strong impact. Make sure you physically point to an object or a subject written on paper or on a white board if you want to emphasize its importance in your topic.
Good Posture
Demonstrating good posture shows people that you are confident and puts you in a commanding and powerful position. If you are sitting, sit up straight, with your back against the back of the chair, your shoulders back and facing forward and your feet flat on the floor. If you want to give the impression that you are interested towards the person or subject, slightly leaning forward should do the trick. And unless you are emphasizing a topic, keep your hands neatly folded on your lap or at your sides.
Facial Expressions
Another effective way of getting a subject to react positively towards you is by smiling. At the same time, be mindful not to appear too cartoonish to the point that you lose credibility with the other person ending up not taking you seriously since you appear comical. At the same time, refrain from appearing stoic because an unmoving facial expression signifies disinterest. Show emotion through your face such as raising your eyebrows to show interest and nod when the other person is trying to make a point. Just try not to force it or it will appear unnatural.
Knowing how to effectively utilize body language is sure to increase your chances of getting a positive response from your audience or subject.
